Eames House Anniversary Table

This table, based on the one that the Eameses designed for their own home, was introduced by Herman Miller in 1999 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Eames House. Completed in 1949, the Eames House in Los Angeles’s Pacific Palisades neighborhood was designed by Ray and Charles as part of Arts & Architecture magazine’s Case Study House Program, which engaged leading architects to devise houses that used new building materials and construction technologies. Although the combination home-and-studio was constructed of commercially available, prefabricated steel parts, its interior was highly personalized. This table was based on one that the designers made for the upholstered, low-ceilinged alcove that created a cozy nook within an otherwise open living space. This table, like its predecessor, uses a wood-dowel-and-steel-rod base that supports a double-layered tabletop in which a wood layer is covered by a brass top finished with hand-applied gold leaf. The design, developed by the Eames Office in conjunction with Herman Miller, was released in a limited edition of 500, with the proceeds supporting the Eames Foundation.
